Atomic Oxygen Erosion Resistance of Siloxane/Silica Hybird Coatings in Space Environment

AbstractSiO2/siloxane hybrid coatings on polyimide substrates were synthesized with CH3Si (OC2H5)(3) and Si(OC2H5)(4) as raw materials, hydrochloric acid as catalyst and C2H5OH as solvent by sal-gel method. The coatings irradiated by atomic oxygen generated in a ground simulation facility were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results show that the siloxane/SiO2 coatings have excellent AO resistance. The siloxane/SiO2 hybrid coating have an erosion rate two orders of magnitude slower than the polyimide film, and do not crack during AO exposure. The results indicate that a passive inorganic SiO2 layer is formed on the silxoane/SiO2 hybrid coatings during AO exposure. This SiO2 layer could retard the inward penetration of oxygen atoms effectively, preventing further degradation of the bulk polymer. The coatings have no influence on the optical property of the substrate materials. The results demonstrate that the coatings prepared by sol-gel technique have potential applications in spacecraft materials.
