Thermal plasticity of titanium alloys and fabrication of titanium matrix composites by hydrogenation

AbstractAn investigation on the effect of hydrogen on phase transformation and thermal plasticity of titanium alloys with typical microstructures has been carried our. The experimental results clearly show that the alpha/beta transformation temperature of titanium alloys with alpha single phase and (alpha+beta) dual phases microstructures can be greatly lowered by hydrogenation, with the result that the relative fraction of deformable beta phase in microstructures of the alloys above a certain temperature can be obviously increased and the thermal plasticity of the alloys can be effectively enhanced. Therefore, the idea of lowering the fabrication temperature of titanium matrix composites by hydrogenation to the matrix was suggested and it has been realized that SiC fiber continuously reinforced Ti-1100 and Ti-6dAl-4V matrix composites were successfuly fabricated by diffusion bonding technique at temperatures 50 degrees C lower than the-normal ones, as a result that the extent of interface reaction between fiber/matrix in composites was effectively decreased and the thickness of reaction layer was evidently reduced.
