Nominal mode I and mixed mode I/II fatigue tests were carried out on Ni3Al alloy single crystal specimens. The effects of crystallographic orientation and loading mode on short fatigue crack growth in Ni3Al alloy single crystals were studied. The results show that there exists a strong effect of crystal orientation on the fatigue crack paths under either the nominal mode I or mixed mode I/II loading. Short fatigue crack growth rate in Ni3Al alloy single crystals is dependent on both crystal orientation and applied loading mode. The typical short crack growth behavior similar to that in polycrystalline materials occurred in these mixed mode crystallographic cracks, but the mixed mode crystallographic fatigue short crack growth rate is much lower than that of mode I short fatigue cracks.
