Glass transition of rare-earth based metallic glasses: temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry

AbstractThe glass transition temperature of several metallic glasses, La(55)Al(25)Ni(10)Cu(10), Nd(60)Fe(30)Al(10), Y(60)Fe(30)Al(10), Pr(60)Fe(30)Al(10), and Sm(60)Fe(30)Al(10), has been studied by temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC). We demonstrate that the glass transition can be separated from crystallization by TMDSC. Glass transition has been observed for Nd(60)Fe(30)Al(10), Y(60)Fe(30)Al(10), Pr(60)Fe(30)Al(10) and Sm(60)Fe(30)Al(10) ribbons, which occurred at temperatures at least 130 K less than the crystallization temperature in Nd(60)Fe(30)Al(10), Y(60)Fe(30)Al(10), Pr(60)Fe(30)Al(10) and Sm(60)Fe(30)Al(10) glasses.
