AbstractA new method was introduced to measure strain rate sensitivity m of creep at room temperature by using depth-sensing nanoindenter. The results show that the average value of m of single crystal Cu (123) is 0.0045, but that of well-annealed polycrystalline Cu and of electrodeposited nanocrystalline Cu with an average grain size about 30 nm is 0.007 and 0.0094 respectively. The curves of indentation creep are analogous to those obtained from conventional uniaxial creep experiments. The average values of indentation creep rate sensitivities are independent of loading conditions, but are close related to the microstructure of the materials.
