AbstractAlN particles are drastically refined by ball milling, from an original particle size of 40 mum to the range of 30-200 nm. High-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) observations demonstrate that the grain size refinement is governed by plastic deformation via creation, motion and rearrangement of dislocations. During the processing of grain size refinement, crystalline lattice distortion may occur, which results in the disappearance of intrinsic character for AlN.
