AbstractAn investigation has been made into the nucleation and growth characteristics of the dendritic gamma'-precipitates in a single crystal nickel-base superalloy which is directly aged after homogenizing and solutioning at high temperature. The results show that the temperature for gamma'-precipitation is sensitive to the alloy composition in a local area. The relationship between the nucleation density (1) and undercooling(DeltaT(gamma),) for the dendritic gamma'-precipitation has been found to be exponential which can be described in terms of a simulation equation: I = 2.5x 10(-3) exp(0.11 DeltaT(gamma)) The size of the gamma'-precipitates is proportional to the direct aging time under a small undercooling. The preferential growth direction of the dendritic gamma'-precipitates is <110> which is completely coherent with the gamma-matrix. The formation mechanism for the dendritic gamma'-precipitates has been proposed to involve both diffusion-and nondiffusion controls. It tends to form nucleii symmetrically.
