Effects of SiCp size on tensile property of aluminum matrix composites fabricated by powder metallurgical method

AbstractThe aluminium matrix composites reinforced by the SiC particles with various sizes were fabricated via powder metallurgical technique, and their tensile properties were tested. The results indicate that the composite with small particle (< 7 mum) possess high tensile strength, their breakage is due to tearing of matrix near interface. The composites with large particle possess low strength and their failure results from cleavage crack of SiCp, but they have higher plasticity than that of the composites with small particle. The composite reinforced with 17%SiCp (7 mum) has the best tensile property.
