AbstractBulk Ti3AlC2 was prepared by a solid-liquid reaction synthesis/in-situ hot pressing process utilizing elemental powders of Ti, Al and graphite as starting materials. This process demonstrated the advantages of simultaneous synthesis and densification, short synthesis time and low pressure. The isothermal oxidation behavior of bulk Ti3AlC2 was investigated at 800-1300degreesC in air for exposure time of up to 20 hours by means of TG, XRD, SEM and EDS. It is demonstrated that Ti3AlC2 has excellent oxidation resistance. The scale formed was dense, adhesive and stratified. The inner layer of the scales formed below 1300degreesC was continuous alpha-Al2O3. The outer layer changed from rutile TiO2 below 1200degreesC to a mixture of Al2TiO5 and TiO2 at 1300degreesC.
