AbstractA model has been developed to describe the formation of the carbon atmosphere around dislocations during aging of a low carbon steel by taking into account, the effects of the preexisting cementite particles and the saturation of the dislocations. Strain aging experiments have been carried out with an ultra low carbon steel. The experimental results have been compared successfully with the theoretical calculations. The effect of the pre-existing cementite particles on the formation of the Cottrell atmosphere has been discussed.
