AbstractThe reaction layer between Ti-46Al (at.%) casting and a calcia stabilized cubic zirconia shell mould was characterized using a range of techniques. In the TiAl alloy, the thickness of the layer was found by scanning electron microscopy to be non-uniform and can be as much as 230 mum. Zr was found to be enriched at the grain boundaries of the lamellar microstructure in the reaction layer, and was present in the form of Al2Zr as determined by electron diffraction. New phases including Al2Zr formed as a result of the dissolution of ZrO2 and subsequent reactions with the molten alloy, serving as grain refinement agents in the reaction zone. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed the formation of TiO, Al2O3, monoclinic ZrO2 as well as the complex cubic compound Ca0.8Ti0.73+Zr2.4O7 on the surface of the casting during reaction.
