Glass-forming ability and thermal stability of bulk Zr55Al10Cu30Ni5-xPdx amorphous alloys

AbstractThe influence of palladium on glass-forming ability (GFA) of bulk Zr55Al10Cu30Ni5-xPdx (atomic fraction, %) (x=0, 1, 3, 5) amorphous alloys was investigated by copper mold casting method. The structure, thermal stability and microstructure of the alloys were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. It is identified that a new bulk amorphous alloy with the largest supercooled liquid region DeltaT(x) of 100 K was obtained when x=1. However, as x=3, the thermal stability of alloy increases a little but GFA decreases obviously.. when x=5, the thermal stability and GFA decreased simultaneously. It indicates that a proper amount of Pd substituting Ni in the alloy will increase the thermal stability.
