Influence of sigma phase on corrosion behavior of 316L stainless steel in high temperature and high pressure water

AbstractIn order to elucidate the impact of sigma phase on the oxidation film formation and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance of 316L stainless steel, corrosion, SCC and three-point bending tests were conducted and the microstructures of the s phase in 316L safe-end pipes were characterized via optical microscopy, environmental scanning electron microscopy and scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy. The results indicated that the s phase was detrimental to the SCC resistance of 316L in high temperature and high pressure environments and the existence of inherently hard and brittle s phase could change the cracking mode.
