| Abstract | Agriculture in China has changed dramatically since the 1950s. The increase in agricultural production in China has been due largely to the enhanced use of hybrid seeds and fossil-energy-derived inputs such as synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. This development has led to a noticeable shortage of major natural resources for agriculture and serious environmental degradation problems. The rapidly increasing population has placed major demands on Chinese agriculture. To meet those challenges, it has been necessary to develop more sustainable and productive agricultural systems. Among the ecological management practices that have been developed and that are now widely used in Chinese agriculture are: intercropping and multiple cropping; minimum tillage and conservation tillage; application of green manures and other organic fertilizers; water-saving cultivation techniques for rice and other crops; cultivation of common duckweed and/or fish in paddy rice fields; combined aquaculture and crop production systems; the development of various agroforestry systems; the integrated use of crop residues and other agricultural wastes for cultivating mushrooms, feeding animals and producing biogas. This paper briefly reviews these current practices in China. Some suggestions for the further development of a more sustainable and productive agriculture in China are discussed. |
