AbstractIn TiAl inetrmetallics, the a(2)-gamma and gamma-gamma interfaces play an important role in improving the ductility and toughness. Under less plastic deformation (2-3%) one set of deformation twins formed in the gamma phase and the initial deformation began at the a(2)-gamma, gamma-gamma interfaces, while under larger plastic deformation (6-7%) second set of twins will be induced and cause interfaces twist. The gamma matrix may be strengthened as the lamellar becomes thinner. Careful measurement for lattice planar spacing shows that there is about 0.7% expansion in the thin gamma slice in comparison with the coarse gamma matrix. Some composite defect structures with two interface dislocations bridged by a stacking fault inside the gamma slice were also identified, which are hard to be moved and become the obstruction of twin or dislocation motion. As result gamma matrix strengthing may degrade toughness (Klc) of the alloys.
