Evolution of microstructure and phase composition of Ti-3Al-5Mo-4.5V alloy with varied beta phase stability

摘要The microstructure evolution and phase composition of an alpha + beta titanium alloy, Ti-3Al-5Mo-4.5V (wt.%), have been investigated. Electron probe micro analysis (EPMA) quantitative results manifest that the stability of beta phase decreases with increasing quenching temperature, which is influenced by the significant variation of beta-stabilizing elements concentration. Detailed microstructure analysis shows that the beta -> omega phase transformation does occur when quenching at 750 degrees C and 800 degrees C. The omega-reflections change from incommensurate omega-spots (750 degrees C) to ideal omega-spots (800 degrees C) as the beta stability of the alloy decreases. Further the decrease of beta phase stability encourages the formation of athermal alpha '' martensite, which has the following orientation relationships: [111](beta)//[110](alpha ''), [100](beta)//[100](alpha ''), and [-110](beta)//[00-1](alpha//) with respect to the beta matrix.
