Accelerated phase transformation of thermally grown alumina on Ni2Al3: Effect of dispersion of hcp-oxides with various content and particle size and chemistry

摘要A promotion in theta-to-a phase transformation of thermally grown alumina on a nickel aluminide coating by dispersing Cr2O3 nanoparticles inside has been reported most recently. In the present work, the nickel aluminide coating has been deliberately dispersed with hexagonal closed pack (hcp)-structured alpha-Al2O3 or Cr2O3 particles which vary in size from nano range to micron range and in content from 2.4 wt% to 6.5 wt%, respectively. The oxidation in air at 900 degrees C leads to several findings: 1) either the finer the size or the higher the content of the oxide particle dispersion, the faster the theta-to-alpha phase transformation, and the lower the oxidation rate, 2) alpha-Al2O3 appears to be more effective than Cr2O3 in facilitating the theta-to-alpha phase transformation; 3) faster theta-to-alpha phase transformation helps to form more adherent thermally grown alumina. The reasons for the results are interpreted.
