Abstract | It has been attempted to prepare niobium coating for AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel (430 FSS) as bipolar plates of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) by disproportionation reaction of Nb(IV) ions in molten NaCl-KCl-NaF under Ar atmosphere, aiming to decrease its corrosion rate and interfacial contact resistance (ICR). Results suggest unexpectedly that the as-deposited coating is composed of nanocrystalline beta-Nb2N instead of metallic Nb. The coating is of great effectiveness in decreasing both the corrosion rate and ICR of 430 FSS, which will be a promising candidate for low cost AISI 430 FSS as bipolar plate of PEMFCs. |
