To improve the corrosion resistance of a magnesium-aluminum-zinc alloy, Al-Nd electrode alloy was melted on the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy by high energy microarc spark alloying(HEMASA) equipment. The corrosion resistance was evaluated through polarization and immersion tests;the microstructure of the Al-Nd coating was examined by optical microscope(OM) and scanning electron microscope( SEM ) ;the phases were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The resuits show that the coating formed by HEMASA improves the corrosion resistance of the AZ31 alloy because of the fine microstructure, rapid solidification and rich content of Al and Nd in the coating.
