AbstractThe (Ti, Al, Zr, Cr) N monolayer and TiAlZrCr/(Ti, Al, Zr, Cr) N gradient films were deposited on cemented carbide (WC-8%Co) substrates by multi-arc ion plating technique using the combined Ti-Al-Zr alloy and pure Cr targets. Short-term isothermal (at 600, 700, 800 and 900 degrees C for 4 h) and long-term cyclic (at 600 and 700 degrees C for 100 h) oxidation tests of the two films were carried out. And the oxide scales formed on the film specimens were characterized by SEM and XRD. Results show that under short-term isothermal condition, the high temperature oxidation resistances are excellent for both the (Ti, Al, Zr, Cr) N monolayer films (up to 700 degrees C) and the TiAlZrCr/(Ti, Al, Zr, Cr) N gradient films (up to 800 degrees C). On the other hand, under long-term cyclic condition, the oxidation resistant temperatures of the (Ti, Al, Zr, Cr) N monolayer and TiAlZrCr/(Ti, Al, Zr, Cr) N gradient films are 600 and 700 degrees C, respectively.
