The dual role of Mg2+ in the conversion bath during the treatment of magnesium alloys: The completing effect between heterogeneous nucleation and crystal growth

AbstractThe accumulation of dissolved Mg in the conversion bath during the treatment of Mg alloys is inevitable, which consequently changes the microstructure and corrosion resistance of conversion coating. But this effect has long been ignored. In this work, the dual role of dissolved Mg on the corrosion resistance of coatings were revealed: the corrosion resistance could be gradually improved when Mg2+ concentration retains less than 0.04 M; the further increase of Mg2+ leads to a gradual deterioration of corrosion resistance. A mechanistic explanation focusing on the completing effect between the heterogenous nucleation and the crystal growth was proposed. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
