A strength model of the metal-matrix composites was suggested. We supposed that the strength of the interface between the fibre and the matrix be ideal and the reaction layer on the interface be so brittle that it would fracture at early time during being drawn. So some cracks formed on the surface of the fibre and these cracks would influence the strength of the fibre. To the knowledge of fracture mechanism of brittle materials, we got the function of σ_(fu) as the thickness of brittle layer. And so we gained the function of σ_(fu) as the annealing temperature T and time t because the brittle layer thickness was a function of T and t. Appling this theory to some metal-matrix composites, so found that the theory accorded well with the experiment. At last, the influence of heat-treating on the strength of C/Al composite was also discussed.
