Relieving residual stresses of stainless steel welded constructure is a worldwide difficult problem. It is hard for heat treatment to give consideration to effect of relieving residual stress, damage of resistance against corrosion and mechanical properties simultaneously. The explosion treatment was carried out on 14mm thick butt-welded A321 stainless steel plates. The experimental results show that about 80 percent of welding tensile residual stresses is eliminated. Therefore, resistance against stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is improved remarkably, and service life is elonged a lot. It was affirmed that this process has no harmful influence on mechanical properties of stainless steel. So explosion treatment is coming to be the most effective method of relieving welding residual stress in stainless steel weldments. Magnitude and distribution of residual stresses of stainless steel as well as feasibility of hole-drilling method for stress measurement were discussed. It was affirmed that this method is suitable for residual stress measurement of stainless steel if rosette of strain gage is matched with hole diameter appropriately.
