Based on review of the excellent performance of laser tools and their applications in the field of the machining and modifying of electronic or structural ceramic, and the manufacturing of ceramic coatings on metal substrates, the present paper reports the results of the study of application of laser to produce glass coatings on metal substrates for corrosion and ware protection and the relevant physical-chemical behaviors of the glass coatings. In order to deposit excellent Na-K-Ca-Al-B silicate glass coatings on carbon steel substrates, the technique of laser cladding is extensively studied with the following three fundamental aspects being focused on: the laser cladding processing and optimization, the interface interaction between the glass and the carbon steel substrates, and the solidification precipitation of glass melt and the microstructure of the coatings. Based on the priminary research results, a new approach has been proposed for the manufacture of crack-free ceramic coatings by laser cladding technique.
