Improving pitting resistance of Mo-containing stainless steels via chloride-assisted stabilization of the passive film

摘要Molybdenum is well known as a beneficial alloying element which entitles stainless steels an enhanced resistance against chloride attack. It is generally accepted that Mo modifies passive film to be more resistant to chloride attack. Here, by means of aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, we show that it is the chloride ions that stimulate Molybdenum accumulating in passive films and meanwhile induce film thickening, which are responsible for the enhancement of corrosion resistance. By passivation aging in chloride media, we obtain a great enhancement of the pitting resistance. Our results show the broad prospects for useful practical applications in anti-corrosion interventions.
