Methylene blue-based multifunctional sensor for sensitive detection of organic solvents and gases

摘要Herein, novel chemical sensors based on methylene blue (MB) organic semiconductor materials were fabricated. The optical properties of the MB-based sensors were investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy, and the band gap of MB was also found to be approximately 3.244 eV. Furthermore, copper electrodes were fabricated and then deposited on a plastic substrate. The gas sensing properties of the MB-based thin film device were investigated at 100 Hz, 200 Hz, 300 Hz, 500 kHz and 1 kHz frequencies using three different gases, i.e. ammonia, methanol, and ethanol, while for temperature sensitivity, the frequencies were 100 Hz, 120 Hz, 1 kHz, 10 kHz and 100 kHz. The capacitance increased with increasing concentration of gases, while the resistance decreased with increasing concentration. An increase in the capacitance and a decrease in the resistance were also observed during the temperature sensing process. The as-prepared MB-based sensors showed an ultrahigh sensitivity compared to traditional gas and temperature sensors. Therefore, this study opens the door for new MB-based sensors to be used for the construction of highly stable and rapid multifunctional sensors for multiple applications.
