Insight into oxidation difference between Cr2N and CrN coatings

摘要The oxidation behavior of Cr 2 N and CrN coatings prepared by arc ion plating was comparatively investigated at 900 degrees C for 5 h. The results revealed that the thickness of oxide scale on CrN coating was around 1/7 of that on Cr 2 N coating, where the oxide scales had no difference in composition but exhibited distinct morphologies. It is proposed that, except for the effect of Cr activity, the unique platelike Cr 2 O 3 grains grown on CrN coating contribute mostly to its ultralow oxidation rate by impeding the grain boundary diffusion of cations. Furthermore, Cr -N coatings experienced significantly different microstructural evolution, where Cr 2 N coating underwent a partial transformation to CrN beneath the chromia scale and near the interdiffusion zone, whereas the CrN coating exhibited excellent structural and interfacial stability during oxidation.
