Preparation of aluminum foam sandwich with metallurgical bonding using friction stir welding

摘要Precursor-foaming is currently the main route to fabricate aluminum foam sandwich with metallurgical bonding. However, in this route, high-temperature foaming induces grain coarsening of the face material and thus weakens the integral mechanical property of the sandwich. Herein, metallurgical bonding between the faces and foam was realized using friction stir welding, during which the face grains were refined. The resulted sandwich showed improved flexural performance compared with the bare foam and sandwich with adhesive bonding.
