Normalizing treatment was employed to refine the coarse pearlite in 34MnV steel. The effect of normalizing temperature on the grain size was analyzed. The change of strength and toughness of the steel was explained from the effective grain size and pearlite fraction. The results show that the normalizing reduces the pearlite content and obtains a pearlite-ferrite structure with fine grain size and high toughness in 34MnV steel. The lower normalizing temperature leads to the finer grain size and the reduced pearlite content leads to the decreased strength, while the impact toughness of the steel is greatly enhanced by the grain refinement and the increase of the ferrite content.
