Titanium nanoparticles were synthesized by gas condensation method, where the particles with different average diameters were obtained by varying the gas pressure in the atmosphere of argon and helium, respectively. The structure, morphology and composition of the particles were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The results showed that the prepared particles were 5-27nm in diameters and that the titanium nanoparticle was evoluted from normal hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure to an abnormal facecentred cubic (fcc) stru-cture with the particle diameter decreasing. The formation mechanism of abnormal structure was discussed as well.
