Inhomogeneous deformation in compression - Comparison of two bulk-metallic glasses

摘要The mechanical behavior of the work-hardening Cu(47.5)Zr(47.5)Al(5) bulk-metallic glass in compression was investigated and compared with that of Zr(55)Ni(5)Al(10)Cu(30) bulk-metallic glass. Two glassy alloys exhibit substantially different plastic-flow behaviors and shear-band patterns. Cu(47.5)Zr(47.5)Al(5) displays much smaller inhomogeneity of the plastic deformation both in time and in space than Zr(55)Ni(5)Al(10)Cu(30). The work-hardening capability of Cu(47.5)Zr(47.5)Al(5) may originate from deformation-induced nanocrystallization that may strengthen effectively a shear band.
