Flame retardant nano-coatings were prepared by adding nano-concentrates with nano-TiO2 and nano-SiO2 to an ammonium polyphosphate-pentaerythritol-melamine (APP/PER/MEL) coating. The dispersion principle of nano-TiO2 and nano-SiO2 particles was analyzed by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The improvement of nano-concentrates in humid heat resistance and fire resistance of an APP/PER/MEL coating was studied by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential thermal analysis (DTA), mechanical tests and a fire protection test. The interpenetrating network formed by uniformly dispersed nano-TiO2 and nano-SO2 could greatly enhance the coating resistance to a humid tropical condition. The chemical action of flame retardants and synergism between the APP-PER-MEL system in a traditional coating was seriously harmed by the humid tropical test while the nano-coating was affected very little by the humid tropical test and still retained very good fire resistance and mechanical properties even after the humid tropical test.
