A NiO-forming Ni-5Cr-5Al (at.%) alloy has been developed and deposited as a sputtered nanocrystalline coating. The oxide formation and oxidation behavior of this coating have been studied at 1000 degrees C in air. The oxidation rate markedly decreased with time and the oxidation kinetics obeyed the fourth power law. Complex oxide scales, consisting of NiO, NiAl2O4 and alpha-Al2O3, were formed during 200 hr oxidation. The outer oxide layer consisted of NiO and NiAl2O4 and an inner oxide layer of alpha-Al2O3. The sputtered Ni-5Cr-5Al nanocrystalline coating showed good oxidation resistance due to the formation of an alpha-Al2O3 inner layer and excellent adhesion of the complex oxide scales.
