AbstractThe microstructure and solidification process of an Al-Mg-Si alloy have been studied to evaluate the formation of intermetallic compounds during slow solidification of a cooling rate of 2 degrees C/min. The as-cast microstructure consisted of five phases of alpha-Al, beta (Al5FeSi), pi (Al8Si6Mg3Fe), Mg2Si and Si. Not only binary eutectic and ternary eutectic reactions were observed, but also a quarternary eutectic reaction L --> alpha-Al + pi (Al8Si6Mg3Fe) + Mg2Si + Si occurred in the fully solidified zone.
