An in-situ multi-phase composite NiAl/CI(Mo)-TiC was successfully reaction-synthesized from elemental powders using a hot-pressing aided exothermic synthesis technique (HPES). The Vickers hardness, fracture toughness as well as compressive strengths of the composites were investigated. It was found that the strengths of the as-fabricated composites are substantially higher than that of monolithic NiAl and most other NiAl-based composites reported elsewhere. The microstructures of the composites are also reported. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
