A Raman scattering study of the isotope effect in (NH4)(2)PbCl6

摘要Raman spectra of (NH4)(2)PbCl6 and (ND4)(2)PbCl6 crystals have been recorded in the temperature range 5 K-300 K. (NH4)(2)PbCl6 undergoes only one structural phase transition at T-c1 = 78 K from a cubic (O-h(5)) to a trigonal structure (C-3i(2)), whereas (ND4)(2)PbCl6 undergoes structural phase transitions from a cubic (O-h(5)) to a trigonal structure (C-3i(2)) at T-c1 = 79 K, and to a monoclinic or orthorhombic structure at T-c2 = 34 K. Continuous changes of the Raman-active modes at T-c1 in both compounds show that the structural transition from cubic to trigonal is one of second order and results from distortions with symmetry related to the T-1g irreducible representation at the Gamma point. Discontinuous behaviours of the Raman modes at T-c2 in (ND4)(2)PbCl6 show that the second structural transition is one of first order.
