THE STRUCTURE AND MAGNETIC HARDENING IN MECHANICALLY ALLOYED SM-FE-TI SYSTEMS

AbstractIn the series of SmxFe91-xTi9 (x = 15-30) and Sm26Fe74-yTiy (y = 0-18), synthesized by mechanical alloying, the dependence of the magnetic hardening behavior on the microstructure which is determined by the composition and heat treatment condition, has been studied in somewhat detail. The maximum room temperature coercivity (i)H(c) = 75 kOe for the resin-bonded magnet with the composition Sm26Fe65Ti9, annealed at 840-degrees-C for 50 min, has been achieved. The high coercivity results from the A2 phase, Sm5(Fe, Ti)17. An incomplete solid state reaction to form the A2 phase, due to low annealing temperature and/or short heat-retaining time gives a low coercivity. The occurrence of a cubic phase with atomic ratio Sm:Fe:Ti almost-equal-to 1:6:1 and the lattice constant a = 8.023 angstrom, which is first reported in the present paper, leads to degradation of the coercivity of the magnets with the composition 15 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 20. A special project of annealing treatment has been designed to investigate the transformations between the phases in the alloys.
