AC-SUSCEPTIBILITY ANOMALY AND MAGNETIC-ANISOTROPY OF R2CO17 COMPOUNDS, WITH R = Y, CE, PR, ND, SM, GD, TB, DY, HO, ER, TM, AND LU

摘要The temperature dependence of the ac susceptibility, chi' and chi'', was measured in the temperature range from 4.2 to 300 K for various polycrystalline compounds R2Co17, with R = Y, Ce, Pr, Nd, SM, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Lu and single-crystalline compounds R2Co17, with R = Pr, Nd, Dy, Tb, Ho, and Er. A spin-reorientation transition was traced in Pr2Co17 and Nd2Co17 at 180 and 175 K, respectively. An anomalous phenomenon, which was observed in R2Co17 compounds, with R = Tb, Dy, and Ho, is characterized by a peak in the curve of chi' and chi'' versus T. It is deduced that the nature of this anomalous phenomenon is correlated with the magnetic anisotropy within the basal plane. This anomaly is attributed to a temperature-induced domain-wall movement under excitation of the external ac field. For the uniaxial-anisotropy compounds Er2Co17 and Tm2Co17, a sharp change of the shape of the temperature dependence of the ac susceptibility was observed. No anomaly in chi'(T) and chi''(T) is detectable in Y2Co17, Ce2Co17, Gd2Co17, and Lu2Co17. The anisotropy field, H(A), of uniaxial-anisotropy Ce2Co17, Sm2Co17, Er2Co17, and Tm2Co17 has been determined by the singular-point-detection technique in the temperature range from 4.2 to 1000 K. The easy-magnetization direction of Ce2Co17 is found to be along the c axis over the whole magnetically ordered temperature.
