Sections of high strength steels damaged by fracture are examined in terms of the fractal dimensions by the vertical section and slit island method whereby assessment could be made on the change in material texture. The former gave a better description. In general, the relation between the fractal dimensions and log K(lc) is linear but the trends are opposite for those in the crack growth and transverse direction. That is, one increases with increasing K(lc) and the other decreases. This could be attributed to the relative difference in the energy release rates that would affect the degree of material damage. As the effect in the crack growth direction dominates, the sum of the two fractal dimensions tend to increase with the log K(lc). Suggested is the possibility of correlating fractal dimensions to material damage near the fracture surface.
