The stress dependence of EPR spectra was studied for Y3Ga5O12:Cr3+ crystals by calculating the spin-lattice coupling coefficient G44 within the framework of the cubic field approximation involving two parameters obtained from the optical spectra. The result shows good agreement with the experimental data. On this basis, the trigonal distortion for the (CrO6)9- group in the crystal was determined from the zero-field splitting. The result, though smaller than that of the host crystal, is consistent with that obtained from the observed values of the anisotropic g-factor. It appears that the assumption that the octahedral environment of the substituting Cr3+ ion in the Y3Ga5O12 (YGG) crystal is more regular than that of the host ion, is necessary and reasonable for explaining satisfactorily the EPR spectra.
