Atomic modelling of crack initiation on twin boundaries in alpha-titanium under external tensile loading along various orientations

AbstractDislocation-grain boundary interaction is considered as the core issue of fatigue crack initiation in alpha-titanium alloys, where, however, the underlying processes still remain unclear. In the present study, the interaction between < a & rang;-dislocations and coherent twin boundaries is simulated with molecular dynamics under various tensile loading orientations. Plastic deformation is found to depend on the tensile orientation, and two typical processes are revealed. In the first, the dislocation transfers into the neighbour grain across the boundary, promoting deformation twinning followed by basal crack initiation, while in the second, the dislocation rebounded at the boundary, resulting in basal crack nucleation therein. In both cases, residual defect structures are left at the boundaries. These results indicate that there exist a wide range of loading orientations, under which dislocation-coherent twin boundary interaction promotes crack initiation on the basal plane; hence, implying its potential relevance to fracture faceting in alpha-titanium alloys.
