Abstract | The effect of SiC particulates (SiCp) on the corrosion of extruded AZ91 magnesium matrix composites (EX-AZ91/SiCp MMCs) was investigated by means of weight loss and electrochemical measurements. The results indicate that the corrosion resistance of EX-AZ91/SiCp MMCs significantly decreases with increasing SiCp volume fraction, which can be explained by the changes in microstructure. The significant refinement of the beta phase accelerates the cathodic hydrogen reduction process, and the preferential recrystallization of the beta phase around the SiCp results in a serious microgalvanic corrosion of the a phase adjacent to the SiCp and the SiCp eventually dropping out of the matrix.
