AbstractThe recrystallization and precipitation behaviors of rolled Al-20 wt% Zn alloy were investigated during artificial aging. Recrystallization occurred preferentially in the shear bands, and recovery occurred in the elongated grains during aging at temperatures less than 200 degrees C. The aged Al-20 wt% Zn alloy showed a bimodal structure composed of fine grains and elongated coarse grains. The formation of Zn layers between Al grains, the coarsening of original Zn phase, and the precipitation of new Zn phase occurred at the same time during aging. The bimodal structure and thin Zn layers greatly affected the strengthening and deformation mechanisms of the Al-20 wt% Zn alloy. The aged Al-20 wt% Zn alloy showed the best mechanical properties after short-time aging at different aging temperatures. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
