Effect of Phosphorus on the Grain Boundary Cohesion and gamma' Precipitation in IN706 alloy

AbstractThe present paper explored the effect of P content and cooling rate on the microstructure and mechanical properties of IN706 alloy, which was related to the grain boundary cohesion and the gamma' precipitation. It was found that P was mainly dissolved in the gamma matrix of IN706 alloy when solutioned at 1463 K (1190 A degrees C), and diffused toward and segregated at grain boundaries with the drop of temperature. When dissolved in the gamma matrix, P did not influence the microhardness, tensile properties, and impact toughness of IN706 alloy. When aged after 1463 K (1190 A degrees C) solution, P increased the room-temperature yield and ultimate strength, and reduced the elongation of IN706 alloy. The results suggested that the segregation of P at the grain boundaries did not reduce the grain boundary cohesion of IN706 alloy. In addition, P facilitated the gamma' phase precipitation by reducing the mismatch lattice between gamma and gamma' phases. As a result, the strength and microhardness of IN706 alloy were enhanced when the P content was increased and the cooling rate from high temperature became smaller.
