Oxidation behavior of powder metallurgy Cu-44wt%Cr-12wt%Fe alloy under different oxygen partial pressures at 800 degrees C

摘要The oxidation of a two-phase ternary Cu-44Cr-12Fe (wt.%) alloy prepared by powder metallurgy (PM) has been studied at 800degreesC under low, intermediate and high oxygen pressures (LOP, IOP and HOP). The oxidation at HOP (1 atm O-2) produced quite complex oxide scales containing an outer CuO layer and an inner layer composed of a mixture of the oxides of the three metal components plus some double oxides (CuCr2O4 and FeCr2O4). The oxide formed at lop (10(-16) atm O-2), when copper is the only noble element, contains an outer layer of iron oxide followed by a region of internal oxidation of chromium with some iron. Finally, an exclusive external chromia oxide formed at LOP (10(-20) atm O-2), when the oxidation of both iron and copper was prevented. The oxidation rates of the alloy decreased gradually with the reduction of the oxygen pressure in the gas, and oxidation mechanism is discussed.
