Abstract | The vector-valued phase field model is computationally convenient to handle anisotropic polycrystalline growth during solidification and the subsequent formation of grain boundary after solidification. Generally, the formation of grain boundary is controlled by the misorientation between grains. In order to correctly simulate the grain boundary and coarsening behavior, reliable evaluation of the orientation angle gradient is crucial because of orientation angle periodicity. The proposed two-dimensional vector-valued phase field model which makes a pair of the transformed phase field and orientation as an ordering vector could avoid the incorrect calculation of the orientation gradient caused by the periodicity. The model was developed based on the previous frequently-used scalar-valued phase field model. Operator splitting method was employed to enable the finite element discretization in a simple way. A series of examples were then tested and benchmarked. Results demonstrate that the developed model is able to handle the orientation angle periodicity, and the computed steady-state tip velocity coincided well with the published benchmark data. The simulation of polycrystalline solidification and formation of grain boundary, as well as the coarsening implies the model's reliability in tackling the common crystal growth phenomena which take place during practical polycrystalline solidification. |
