AbstractInterface structures of Cu/V multilayers fabricated by cross accumulative roll bonding were studied, where two different types of interfaces were identified, i.e. regular sharp interfaces and uncommon interfacial transition zone (ITZ). The unusual ITZs are supersaturated solid solution with Cu atoms dissolved in V matrix, which contribute to similar to 30% of the total interfaces. The formation of ITZ can be ascribed to the dislocation-mediated mass transport at bimetal interfaces, facilitated by the severe plastic deformation upon rolling. Similar ITZs should also exist in other metallic multilayer systems fabricated by severe plastic deformation, which may have important contributions to their performances.
