Abstract | A new Mg-5Zn-3.5Sn-1Mn-0.5Ca-0.5Cu alloy with high strength is developed and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy in the as-cast, extruded and aged states are investigated. The as-cast alloy contains alpha-Mg, MgZn2, Mg2Sn and MgSnCa phase. The extrusion process refines the microstructure and leads to fully dynamic recrystallized grains with a tilted basal texture, which results in moderate mechanical properties of the extruded alloy. Ca acts synergistically with Cu in promoting age hardening and the combined addition of Ca and Cu significantly enhances the peak hardness of the alloy after double aging treatment, the effect is more obvious than the alloys with single addition of Ca or Cu. Fine and densely distributed Mg-Zn and Mg2Sn precipitate after double aging treatment, which contributes to the strengthening of the alloy. The yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the alloy after double aging treatment reach 392 MPa, 401 MPa and 7%, respectively. |
