Abstract | Effects of the inoculants Ti and Zr additions in filler wires on the microstructures and properties of metal inert gas (MIG) welds of 2219 Al-Cu alloy were investigated. The results showed that a fully equiaxed grain structures were formed across the entire welds with additions of 0.26%Ti and 0.33%Zr in filler wires and the amount of eutectic phase along grain boundaries reduced. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation of weld metals were increased greatly. The elements Ti and Zr in weld metals are in the form of intermetallic aluminide dispersoids, which provide the heterogeneous nucleation sites for alpha(Al), resulting in a microstrure with the uniform and fine equiaxed grains. |
