Abstract | The oxidation behavior of ternary Cu-60Ni-10Al and Cu-60Ni-15Al (at%) alloys at 800 degrees C has been studied. The oxidation rates. of the two alloys during the initial oxidation stage are relatively rapid, but compared with the corresponding Cu-Ni binary alloy, the presence of Al reduces the oxidation rates greatly; moreover, with the establishment of a continuous layer of alumina, the oxidation rates of the two alloys have been reduced further. After 24 h oxidation, oxides of copper and nickel can still be found in the outer region of the scale grown on Cu-60Ni-10Al, and thus the presence of 10 at% Al cannot provide full protection for Cu-60Ni-10Al. On the contrary, the scale grown on Cu-60Ni-15Al is totally composed of alumina. Therefore, the optimum Al concentration to achieve full protection for Cu-60Ni-Al alloys is in the range between 10 at% and 15 at%. |
